The Sound of Music was undoubtedly Rogers & Hammerstein’s greatest film success. More than that, it was, and remains, one of the top grossing films of all time.![[The Abbey nuns singing at Maria's wedding]](086-singing.jpg)
The film [imdb.com] premièred in LA on March 2nd 1965, and in New York on March 10th. It was released internationally after this, and stayed on the circuit for over 4 years. At the 1966 Academy Awards, the film won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture.
The Sound of Music brought Julie Andrews to international stardom and the soundtrack album alone sold over 20,000,000 copies, and was still in the charts over 25 years after it was released! Some of the many hit songs include My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain and Edelweiss.
The Pantheon's November 2000 production of The Sound of Music was staged at The King’s, Glasgow, and played to packed houses every night, proving that the show is as popular now as it was when Pantheon last staged it at The King’s, 30 years ago.
