Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off

Following our sell-out production of An Inspector Calls last year, Pantheon was excited to tackle this modern masterpiece of Scottish drama.

Liz Lochhead’s play weaves together the lives of Mary, her cousin Elizabeth I, and Mary’s several husbands and lovers.

Examining the political machinations of pivotal years in a young queen's reign, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off comments on Scotland, politics, power and the roots of modern sectarianism.

While it has its basis in historical fact, this is not a literal account, exploring the myth and rumour of Mary as much as the historical reality. The combination of drama, music, dance and mime makes it a fascinating and unique piece of Scottish theatre.

The past is never as far behind us as we think…
