13–17 June 2006
The Citizens’ Theatre [citz.co.uk]
RUN NOW FINISHED!
…has claim to being the funniest show ever written. —The Guardian
The time: 200 BC. (ish)
The place: Rome.
The scheming slave Pseudolus struggles to win the heart of a virgin courtesan for his young master in return for his freedom. Unfortunately the gods are not on his side. Pseudolus is up against a lecherous father, an attempted abduction, an imaginary plague, mistaken identities, a short-sighted neighbour, a sleeping potion… and a corpse in drag.
Confused?
Written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, the creator of Tootsie and the TV show M*A*S*H, this classical carry on featured Frankie Howerd in the lead role when it opened in London and starred Whoopi Goldberg in a recent run on Broadway. Stephen Sondheim’s show-stopping score (including Comedy Tonight and Everybody Ought to have a Maid) gives the audience a break from the frenetic plotting of this legendary musical comedy.
From curtain up, this zany farce is one of the funniest shows you'll ever see: a mishmash of major mischief, mishaps, mistaken identities, misunderstandings, misconduct and mayhem!
Tragedy tomorrow… comedy tonight!
